Brisbane and Townsville.
Australia’s Sunshine State, Queensland is a backpacker’s paradise. It’s
full of diverse natural beauty and man-made attractions. Queensland has
over 270 National Parks to explore from dense rainforest jungles with
fresh clear waterfalls, to ancient volcanic lave tubes and red sandy
deserts, to some of the whitest beaches in the world. Queensland has
five World Heritage Listed areas:
- The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef system
composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching
for over 2,600 kilometres.
- North Queensland is home to amazing tropical forest stretching
north from Townsville to Cooktown. The most famous of the
forests is the Daintree National Park which is well worth a
visit.
- Fraser Island, 300km north of Brisbane is the world
largest sand island is a must on every backpacker’s Australian trip.
The island has rain forests, eucalyptus woodland, mangrove forests,
wallum swamps, sand dunes and coastal heaths
- Gondwana Rainforests are the most extensive area of
subtropical rainforest in the world. The reserve includes 50
separate reserves totaling 3,665 square km, clustered around the New
South Wales - Queensland border.
- Riversleigh Fossil Fields attained world herritage status
in 1994 for its outstanding representation of the evolution of
Australian mammals and the quality of their fossils, which are
preserved in limestone.
